Manuscripts and Archives hosts an
introduction to its resources, services

Manuscripts and Archives in Sterling Memorial Library will offer a general introduction to the department and its collections, resources and services 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

This session, which is open to the public, is expected to be particularly useful for new faculty, undergraduates beginning work on seminar papers and senior essays, and graduate students investigating topics for research utilizing the department’s holdings.

A major center for primary source research at the University, Manuscripts and Archives is also known for its collections on Yale and New Haven. The collections span centuries and are geographically diverse. They include a wealth of material on the United States, Africa and Latin America, with special focus on American public policy and administration; diplomacy and international affairs; political and social thought and commentary; legal and judicial history; contemporary medical care and health policy; and urbanism, with a specific focus on New Haven. Recent collecting has increased resources for the study of architecture and of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history and culture.

The introductory session will take place in the department’s Cowles Reference Center. Manuscripts and Archives is the first door on the left when entering Sterling Memorial Library from Wall Street. Manuscripts and Archives will also be offering extended hours during the fall term. It will be open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:45 p.m. and will remain open until 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings during the semester. Exceptions are posted on the Library website: www.library.yale.edu/hours/mssa.html. In planning visits, note that reference services are not provided between noon and 1 p.m. or after 4:45 p.m.
