Yale singers will present a selection
of popular opera scenes

If music is food for the soul, then the Yale Opera will be offering audiences a soulful variety pack Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2-3.

The troupe will present its annual “Two Evenings of Opera Scenes” program at 8 p.m. both nights in Sprague Memorial Hall, corner of College and Wall streets.

Each evening will feature a different program of music selected from a variety of popular operas. These will include Bellini’s “I Puritani,” Massenet’s “Don Quichotte” and Rossini’s “Il Barbiere Di Siviglia” on Friday night, and Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” Martinu’s “Comedy on the Bridge” and Donizetti’s “L’elisir D’amore” on Saturday night. Subtitles will be employed for all scenes not sung in English.

Yale Opera, under the artistic direction of Doris Yarick-Cross, is part of the Yale School of Music. The program has been hailed as America’s foremost training ground for young singers

Thor Steingraber, a young American stage director who has already been associated with major opera companies throughout the United States, did the stage direction for “Two Evenings of Opera Scenes.” He is a resident at the Lyric Opera of Chicago where he has worked on nearly 20 productions since 1995. He also has a decade-long association with the Los Angeles Opera. Along with directing multiple operas throughout the United States, Steingraber is highly regarded for his work as an acting coach among young and veteran singers alike.
