STONE PAINTINGS BY ALUMNA ON VIEW AT SCHOOL OF NURSING

It's not unusual for an artist to create works of stone. It is perhaps less usual for that artist to be a painter, rather than a sculptor.

Stones are the canvasses on which School of Nursing graduate Larice Burtt creates her works of art. The alumna's stone paintings will be on display through June 8 in the Elizabeth Kurtz Puzak Student Lounge at her alma mater's new home, 100 Church St. South. The exhibit opened on May 8 during National Nurses Week.

Ms. Burtt combines the natural shapes of stones with her own imagination and some acrylic paint to transform rocks -- some of them weighing as much as 75 pounds -- into works of art. Many of her creations bear images of animals, such as cougars, sea tortoises or gorillas; others are covered with scenes on various themes.

A longtime resident of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Ms. Burtt has exhibited her works in numerous juried art and crafts shows in the Delaware Valley, as well as gallerys and museums throughout the United States, including the Grand Canyon National Museum.

The artist, who received her M.N. degree from the School of Nursing in 1955, says: "I am very grateful for the attitudes, inspiration, information and associations given to me during my years at Yale. This is the only education I have used in a thousand different ways throughout my life and career."
