At its annual symposium, Yale will feature the two physicians who identified the virus and cause of Lyme disease, the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the United States.
The Ninth Annual Lyme Disease Symposium, sponsored by the School of Medicine's section of rheumatology, will be held 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in the Mary S. Harkness Auditorium, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. The symposium is directed toward primary care physicians, rheumatologists and other health care professionals.
Dr. Allen C. Steere and Dr. Stephen E. Malawista, who co- discovered the disease at Yale, will speak, respectively, on the treatment of arthritis-related Lyme disease and the uses and pitfalls of molecular techniques in diagnosing and following patients with Lyme disease.
Other speakers will include Dr. Robert T. Schoen, who will update physicians on the safety and success of vaccines in progress; and Richard A. Flavell, who will speak about the strides made toward a recombinant human Lyme disease vaccine.
