Seminars offer guidelines on the ethical conduct of research

The School of Medicine's Offices of Academic Development, Grant & Contract Administration and Scientific Affairs will jointly sponsor three seminars on "Guidelines for the Ethical Conduct of Research."

"Because the School of Medicine is committed to maintaining the highest scientific and interpersonal standards in the conduct of research, we have planned this seminar series to continue to foster an environment of scientific productivity and ethical conduct in research," states Dr. Lawrence S. Cohen, special adviser to the dean and the Ebenezer K. Hunt Professor of Medicine. He will conduct the seminars for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members.

Dr. Cohen adds, "The professional literature related to research integrity has increased, reflecting a growing awareness of interest in ethical issues in research stimulated, in part, by recent National Institutes of Health requirements."

This series follows programs that Dr. Cohen and colleagues presented last spring. The basic format of the sessions will be case discussion and videotape, with significant audience participation. All of the seminars will meet on Tuesdays, noon-1 p.m. in the Jane Ellen Hope Building Amphitheatre, 310 Cedar St., Rm. 103. The Yale community is invited to attend.

The scheduled sessions are:

Nov. 5 -- "Authorship: What Is in a Name?"
Dec. 3 -- "Data Handling: There Can Be No Fudge."
Jan. 14 -- "Handling of Misconduct: Due Process, Fairness, Truth and Wisdom Mark the Starting Line."
