SENATOR SAM NUNN TO DISCUSS U.S. NATIONAL SECURITY

U.S. Senator Sam Nunn D-GA will lecture on the topic "U.S. National Security at the Turn of the Century" on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. His visit, presented under the auspices of the Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale, is sponsored by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies, the Law School and the School of Management. It is free and open to the public.

Senator Nunn, an internationally recognized expert on economic policy, defense and national security, is the ranking Democrat on both the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. He also serves on its Small Business Committee. He is consistently ranked among the most effective senators in surveys of journalists and congressional staff members, and was rated one of the five most respected members of the Senate in a 1990 survey of senior congressional aides. In 1986, Senate press secretaries dubbed him the "Workhorse of the Senate," and The Almanac of American Politics describes him as "one of the most powerful figures in American government -- and one of the key players in American politics."

Senator Nunn first entered politics as a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives in 1968. Throughout his public life, he has focused his efforts on strengthening America's defenses, reducing the threat of nuclear war, restoring fiscal responsibility and accountability in the federal government and streamlining the federal bureaucracy. Senator Nunn's other main objectives have been to develop a comprehensive anti-drug strategy; to initiate a national land conservation program to protect the environment; to combat waste, fraud and abuse in government programs and agencies; and to instill a new sense of citizenship nationwide.

The Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale was established with an endowment from the Coca-Cola Foundation to foster innovative cross-disciplinary activities in the study of international relations, law and management.
