HOWARD GARLAND APPOINTED EINAR HILLE PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS

Howard Garland, a mathematician who is internationally known for his work in applying Lie group theory to number theory, has been appointed the Einar Hille Professor of Mathematics by vote of the Yale Corporation.

Professor Garland focuses his current work on the relation between infinite dimensional Lie theory, number theory and physics. He is noted for his discovery in the early 1970s of P -adic curvature, which provided a means of applying geometric methods to the solution of some central problems in algebra, and for his finiteness theorem for K2 integer. He has authored some 30 papers in the field of mathematics, many of which have been published worldwide, as well as a 130-page paper titled "The Arithmetic Theory of Loop Groups," published in 1980.

Professor Garland joined the Yale faculty as an instructor in 1964 and was promoted to assistant professor two years later. He left the University in 1969 and taught at Cornell and Columbia universities and the State University of New York at Stony Brook before returning to Yale as a full professor in 1973. He was director of graduate studies in the mathematics department 1978-79. He became chair of the department this year.

During 1983-84 Professor Garland was a visiting researcher at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. Over the years he has been a guest lecturer at universities and mathematical meetings throughout the United States, including the International Congress of Mathematicians and the American Mathematical Society. He is a member of the latter scholarly organization.

Professor Garland's honors include a Junior Faculty Fellowship, which was awarded by the University earlier in his career.
