Political analyst Juan Williams to offer "A Look at the Election That Was"

Juan Williams, award-winning writer and political analyst for the Washington Post, will discuss the meaning of the just-conducted national elections as the year's first Poynter Fellow in Journalism at Yale. Mr. Williams will present his talk, "The Revolution of '96: A Look at the Election That Was," on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. in the Sterling Memorial Library lecture hall, 120 High St. His talk is free and open to the public.

During his 20-year tenure at the Washington Post, Mr. Williams has served as an editorial writer, columnist, White House correspondent and national correspondent covering political and social issues, including gun control, abortion and affirmative action.

Over the years Mr. Williams has also appeared as a host, panelist or guest commentator on numerous national television news and public affairs programs, including "Nightline," "Crossfire," "Good Morning America," "Firing Line," "Capital Gang," the PBS "Newshour," CBS News, "Inside Washington" and "Washington Week in Review." He is currently a panelist on CNN's "Capital Gang Sunday." He has served as a writer and correspondent for a number of PBS documentaries, and won an Emmy Award for Documentary Writing in 1989.

Mr. Williams, who is currently writing a biography of former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, is the author of "Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years, 1954-65," which was a Book- of-the-Month selection. He has also contributed articles to The Atlantic Monthly, Fortune, The New Republic and other magazines.

His awards and recognitions include the top political commentary prize in 1990 from the American Association of University Women and the 1995 award of the Education Writers of America for best magazine article.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism at Yale was established by Nelson Poynter, M.A. '27, and brings to campus journalists who have made significant contributions to their field. Previous Poynter Fellows have included Bob Woodward, Tim Russert, David Gergen, Anna Quindlan and Charlene Hunter-Gault.
