Yale and Hong Kong students to discovery joys of 'Migration'

"Migration" is both the theme of the fourth annual undergraduate exchange between Yale College and New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and an apt description of the program itself.

Under the program, eight students from New Asia will visit Yale for two weeks, Feb. 1-14, during the college's Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) break. In March, eight Yale College students will travel to Hong Kong for the second half of the exchange.

The Hong Kong delegation to Yale will be led by Peter Man, secretary of New Asia College, one of four academic colleges that comprise the University of Hong Kong. As in past years, the New Asia students will live in dormitories with their Yale hosts, attend classes and special lectures and participate in other student activities. During the exchange, the Hong Kong students also plan to spend two days in the homes of area educators who are connected with the Connecticut Geographic Alliance. The exchange program also includes trips to area attractions, as well as excursions to New York City, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The Yale delegation to Hong Kong will be led by Caryn White, director of the Program in International Education Resources at Yale. The students chosen to participate in the exchange are Sarah Baker '99 and Cynthia Weiss '99 of Ezra Stiles College; Vladimir Cole '99 and Cindy Huang '99 of Silliman College; Toby Gardner '98 of Saybrook College; Albert J. Ko '98 and Jerry Lee '98 of Timothy Dwight College; and Jasmine Moore '98 of Pierson College.

Established in 1994, the exchange program is an outgrowth of the longstanding relationship between Yale and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which have sponsored many faculty, graduate and postgraduate exchanges over the years. At Yale, the undergraduate exchange program is supported by the Council on East Asian Studies; in Hong Kong, the program is supported by New Asia College and a private benefactor. Both the Yale and Hong Kong students must make a contribution toward the cost of their airfare.
