Security
The Yale University Police Department distributes a pamphlet titled "Security at Yale." Its contents incude background and information on the services of the Yale Police department and the University Security Programs department. In addition, it gives self- help tips for avoiding theft situations and confrontational crimes against persons, such as robbery or assault.
Moreover, it lists the nighttime transportation services available for getting around campus and all the emergency numbers one would need while in the Yale community. All freshmen receive a copy and upperclass members may obtain additional copies from their master's office, the deans' offices of the graduate or professional schools or at any of the crime prevention information tables set up in all dining halls the first two weeks of each new orientation. Faculty may obtain a copy from their department chair. Copies may also be ob-tained from the administration office at 98-100 Sachem Street and the Crime Prevention office at the police substation at 258 Park St.
Crime Prevention
Crime against persons may occur in any area of the University community. Students, faculty and staff must exercise common sense when walking or jogging through the urban areas surrounding the campus, and are urged to walk or jog in groups, and to use the nighttime transporation service and Student Patrol escorts. In the residential colleges and graduate dormitories, students are reminded to lock room doors at all times and never prop open entryway doors or gates that are designed to stay closed and locked. A videotape on personal security at Yale is shown at all freshperson orientations, which are mandatory. It is also available to all students, faculty and staff. The video portrays different crime situations that might occur and demonstrates how to avoid them or cope with them should they happen.
Physical Security
Physical security is the responsibility of the University Security Programs department, which is located at 100 Church St. South, in the medical area. The University Security Programs department oversees the administration of physical and electronic security services for the University. In addition, the department manages all functions of medical school security, including the School of Medicine I.D. Center and Medical School Parking and Transit Services.
Emergency Phones
Almost 250 exterior phones are strategically located throughout the campus and are readily identified at night by blue lights suspended above or near them. The phones are equipped with red emergency buttons for direct connection to the Campus Police for police, fire or medical emergencies and with a keypad for dialing any campus number.
Lost and Found
The Lost and Found Center is located in the University Police headquarters and is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Call 432- 4405. Three other areas provide lost and found services:
Operation Identification
Stolen property, when recovered by the police, can be claimed only if it can be positively identified. Because a thief might think twice before taking marked property, members of the Yale community are urged to borrow an electric engraving tool from any master's office, dean's office in the law and graduate schools, the School of Medicine's I.D. Center and Parking and Transit Services office, or the Yale Police department. Personal property should be engraved with a driver's license number and the state in which it was issued. Yale property should be marked with "Yale" plus the school and department identification numbers.
Also available from the above sources are inventory lists and crime prevention stickers which warn burglars that property is marked. Inventory lists should be filed with the Yale Police with duplicates kept in a safe place.
