ANNUAL ORIENTATION TO CITY TO BE HELD, MTV PARTICIPATES

Yale is one of four higher education institutions joining together this year to present "New Haven 101," an introduction to the city for area college and university communities. The event -- described by organizers as "a festive orientation to New Haven for students, faculty and staff of Greater New Haven's colleges and universities" -- will take place on Yale's Old Campus Saturday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Among the highlights of the event will be a visit from MTV's "Choose or Lose" bus, which is traveling the country to inform young voters about the political process and the upcoming presidential election.

New Haven 101 originated at Yale in 1994 as a way to acquaint new members of the Yale community with the Elm City. Although this is the third year of the event, it is the first time four of New Haven's colleges and universities are participating. Joining Yale in sponsoring New Haven 101 this year are Albertus Magnus College, Southern Connecticut State University and the University of New Haven, as well as Vision for a Greater New Haven.

During this year's New Haven 101, election information will be disseminated from the MTV "Choose or Lose" bus -- a custom- designed, touring production unit -- and voter registration will be conducted. The League of Women Voters also will sponsor a separate voter registration drive as part of the day's activities.

In addition to voter information and registration, New Haven 101 will feature exhibits by cultural organizations and city merchants; activities and tours that introduce participants to New Haven's neighborhoods, history and recreational activities; live bands; intramural games; and a broad sampling of food from city restaurants. Many of the 50 exhibitors plan interactive displays, raffles and giveaways for the 1,000 or more participants expected on Old Campus throughout the day.

"New Haven 101 creates a winning situation for everyone," says Michael Morand, assistant secretary of the University and chair of the New Haven 101 organizing committee. "Students, faculty and staff have fun and learn where to shop, where to relax, and how to get involved with the life of the broader New Haven community. Vendors have a free opportunity to exhibit their wares and explain their services. New Haven gains from both. The success of the event is due to the cooperation of all involved, especially the colleges and universities of New Haven."

Bishop Peter Rosazza of Vision for a Greater New Haven says that "seeing the colleges come together to produce an event that benefits all of New Haven is in perfect harmony with what the Vision project is all about." Along with the presidents of the educational institutions involved, Bishop Rosazza is an honorary co-chair of New Haven 101. He adds that "at New Haven 101 the academic community in New Haven -- a community very important to the economy of this city -- will be able to experience the wealth of cultural retail and service resources that New Haven has to offer."

Old Campus is located on Elm Street between College and High streets. Those interested in finding out more about New Haven 101 should contact Heather Calabrese of Vision for a Greater New Haven at 782-4380.
