Conroy named acting director of public affairs

Thomas Conroy has been appointed as acting director of the Office of Public Affairs OPA by President Richard C. Levin.

Mr. Conroy has served as deputy director of the OPA since coming to Yale in March of 1995. In that capacity, he has helped to manage the day-to-day operations of the office and to promote the University in the local and national media.

Previously Mr. Conroy was deputy press secretary to New York Governor Mario Cuomo from 1990 to 1994. He also served with the Governor as senior press officer from 1987 to 1990 and as press officer from 1985 to 1987. Prior to that, Mr. Conroy was a reporter and bureau chief for United Press International in Albany, New York, from 1978 to 1984. He is a graduate of Fordham University.

The OPA, a part of the Yale Secretary's Office, is responsible for the University's media relations and the distribution of information on Yale news and events through the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.

Mr. Conroy will serve as acting director while the University conducts a search to select a successor to Gary G. Fryer, director of public affairs and special assistant to the president, who died on Jan. 27. Mr. Fryer and Mr. Conroy worked together with Governor Cuomo in his press office from 1985-1990.
