The women's swimming and diving team capped off an unbeaten regular season on Feb. 14 with a 164-136 victory over the Tigers of Princeton University -- netting the Eli swimmers their fifth Ivy League title in the last six years. The victory also cinches the first Ivy title in any sport for Yale in the 1996-97 academic year.
The Valentine's Day win at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool in Payne Whitney Gymnasium brought the Bulldogs to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the Ivy League. It is only the second time that the Yale women have gone undefeated; they won their only other unshared Ivy League title in 1993 after a 13-0 season.
Yale trailed halfway through the meet, but had four double winners: juniors Danielle Mailloux, Malindi Davies and Kate Hitchner, and freshman Alison Durley. Ms. Hitchner's seven-point win in the 200IM secured the come-from-behind victory for the Bulldogs.
At press time, the Yale team, coached by Frank Keefe, was hoping to capture its first-ever Eastern Championship at Princeton during the weekend of Feb. 21.
