The Yale women's fencing team captured its second straight Ivy League title by defeating Princeton and Harvard at Payne Whitney Gymnasium on Feb. 22.
The win caps an undefeated season for the Bulldogs, who finished 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the Ivy League. It is also Yale's second Ivy title in 1996-97; the women's swim team won the year's first Ivy championship just two weeks ago.
The Eli fencers defeated the previously unbeaten Harvard 18- 14, winning both the foil and epee 9-7, and topped Princeton 24-8, winning the foil 15-1 and the epee 9-7. In the victory over the Crimsons, Anne Estabrooks '98 and Whitney Anderson '00 both went 3-1 in the epee, while Alison Calabia '98 and Kate Zuckerman '99 each went 3-1 in the foil.
Ms. Anderson leads the team with a 34-6 overall record in the epee, while Ms. Calabia has a 30-6 overall mark in the foil.
This was the third Ivy League title for Coach Henry Harutunian, who is in his 24th season at Yale. The Yale women fencers were scheduled to compete in the IFA Championships at St. John's during the weekend of March 1.
