New Haven students to show off scientific expertise in fair at Yale Commons

Fare designed to tickle the scientific palate will be on the menu at Yale Commons on Tuesday, March 11, when the dining hall serves as the site of the New Haven City-Wide Science Fair.

The fair is sponsored by Yale and Olin Corporation's Metals Research Labs, in partnership with the New Haven Public Schools and the Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program CPEP.

Approximately 180 colorful displays created by students from kindergarten to 12th grade will be featured at the science fair. Twenty city schools are participating in this year's program.

The public is invited to visit the science fair free of charge 3-7 p.m. Yale Commons is located at the corner of College and Grove streets.

Yale and Olin each contributed $12,500 for the fair. In addition, Yale faculty and students and Olin employees have worked closely with teachers and students for many months, serving as science fair advisers, tutors and judges at 10 preliminary competitions.

Robert Apfel, the Robert Higgin Professor of Mechanical Engineering, is coordinating Yale's efforts for the science fair. Also serving as judges will be undergraduate student volunteers in the DEMOS program, who present science demonstrations to New Haven elementary school students in an effort to spark their interest in science careers.

"Yale is proud of its partnerships with the New Haven Public Schools," says Vice President and Secretary Linda K. Lorimer. "Our tremendous strength in the sciences provides a great resource for New Haven, ranging from the Yale School of Medicine's work with the Career High School to this exciting and growing city-wide science fair."
