Athletics Department sponsoring annual 'Spring Cleaning' drive

The basketball that bounces off your head everytime you open the hall closet ... the weight equipment that lies in the basement gathering a layer of dust and guilt ... the Monopoly game that you can't bear to open since being beaten by a 6-year-old ... that duplicate set of "The Bobbsey Twins" adventures ...

All the "nearly new" pieces of sports equipment, games, puzzles, and children's books that have simply been taking up space in your closets, attic and basement can be transformed once more into valued treasures when they are donated to the Athletic Department's annual "Spring Cleaning III" drive. Over the past two years, Yale employees have given more than 1,200 pieces of used sports equipment to the drive. These donations, in turn, have been distributed to local youth agencies by Yale's Office of Community Relations.

This year's drive will be held April 14-25. Donations may be dropped off Monday-Friday during the hours indicated in the main lobbies of the following campus buildings: Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Pkwy., 7 a.m.-10 p.m.; 155 Whitney Ave., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

"We respectfully ask that the equipment you give be in usable condition -- no damaged or broken items, please," says Larry Matthews, associate director of sport and recreation in the Athletics Department. "Likewise, puzzles and games should have all the needed parts or pieces, and books should not be torn or mildewed."

Among the items being sought in this year's drive are: basketballs; ice hockey equipment; weight equipment; softballs, bats and gloves; ice skates and roller skates; soccer balls; tennis racquets and balls; baseballs, bats and gloves; yard games; puzzles; footballs; golf clubs and bags; gym shoes; board games; and children's books.
