The Yale Office of New Haven Affairs and Jazz Haven will cosponsor a concert by the "95-years-young" saxophonist Benny Waters on Sunday, April 20, at 4 p.m. at Artspace, 70 Audubon St. in New Haven.
At an age when many people are in their third decade of retirement, Mr. Waters has been described by the New York Times as "simply a powerhouse, as brash and robust as players one-third his age ... defying age with joy and a horn." The musician himself says, "I just might be playing more alto saxophone than ever."
The saxophonist weaves baritone vocals and colorful story- telling into his jazz improvisations. He will be joined in this concert by the Jazz Haven All-Stars, featuring bassist Jeff Fuller, pianist Harold Danko and drummer Artt Franck.
Jazz Haven is an independent not-for-profit jazz organization whose mission is to nurture interest and participation in the art of jazz music in the Greater New Haven area.
Tickets for this event are $15, available at the door only. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free for Jazz Haven charter members; the 1997 membership fee is $20.
