Researchers to discuss 'metoric advances' in analytical biotechnology

The faculty of engineering will present a symposium titled "Conversazione on Advances in Analytical Biotechnology and Related Areas" on Thursday, April 24, 9 a.m.-6:45 p.m. The event is designed to foster contacts between industry and academia, particularly between the symposium's two cosponsors, Yale and Hewlett-Packard HP .

Morning and early-afternoon presentations will be held in the auditorium of the Peabody Museum, 170 Whitney Ave. Late- afternoon presentations will take place in Rm. 211, Mason Laboratory, 9 Hillhouse Ave. Among the speakers will be D. Allan Bromley, dean of engineering, who will give the opening address.

The "Conversazione" program reflects "the meteoric advances in methodologies and instrumentation brought about by the growing needs in life sciences and biotechnology and by developments in materials science, electronics, computers and other areas of technology," say organizers. In this, the second of the ongoing series, topics addressed will range from the fabrication of nanoanalytical devices to novel instrumental approaches for the characterization of proteins and nucleic acids.

The 9 a.m. opening address will be followed by a succession of 35-minute talks offered throughout the day. The talks include such topics and speakers as "New Separation Methods Including Pseudo- electrochromatography/MS for the Study of Post Translational Modifications of Proteins," William S. Hancock, HP, 9:05 a.m.; "Some Non-standard Analytical Uses of Electrospray Ionization," Juan F. de la Mora, Yale, 9:40 a.m.; "New Technologies for Process Monitoring in the Manufacture of Biotechnology Pharmaceuticals," John Frenz, Genentech, 1:30 p.m.; "Building Computers with Biomolecules," Philip Kuekes, HP, 2:40 p.m.; and "Methods and Issues in the Fabrication of Microanalysis Devices," Reid Alyn Bernnen, HP, 4 p.m.

Presentations also will be made by Yale faculty members Robert Apfel, Marshall Grant and symposium organizer Csaba Horvath, as well as by a representative of Pfizer. The program will conclude with a reception in the Mason Laboratory lobby, during which poster sessions will be held.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, including a complete listing of speakers and topics, call Barbara Skolones at 432-2219.
