Golf teams stroke their way to Ivy championships

Yale nabbed a pair of championship trophies on April 20 at the 1997 Ivy League Golf Championships in Bethpage, New York.

The Eli women's golf team won the first Ivy Golf Championship for women, and the men's team took the title in a historic match that marked the first time in the 22-year history of the men's tournament that the championship was decided by a single stroke.

The Eli women cruised through the five-team field to win by 38 strokes, with a two-day score of 655. Princeton came in second at 693, but was never in contention as the Bulldogs fired a second- round 329 to win the trophy.

Senior Charity Barras led the Bulldogs with a 158 -- 78-78 -- which was good for runner-up honors at the Black Course at Bethpage. Junior Natalie Wong fired a 160 to finish third, while freshman Chawwadee Rompothong was sixth at 168. All three earn All-Ivy honors from their performance on the 5,900-yard layout.

The Bulldog men won their second straight title -- and their fifth of the 1990s -- by recording a two-round total of 606 at the Black Course. The Eli men combined for a 302 during difficult first- round conditions on Saturday and held off second-place Pennsylvania -- 607 -- by a stroke with a 304 on Sunday.

Yale's top individuals were freshman Peter Schumacher, who finished third with a 148, and senior captain Ken Rizvi, the 1996 medalist, who was fourth at 150 on the course that will serve as host of the 2002 Men's U.S. Open.
