Bike tour along the shore will benefit Habitat for Humanity

Three Yale-sponsored teams will be "Pedaling to End Poverty Housing" during a benefit bike tour sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, Inc. on Saturday, May 3.

This is the first bike tour sponsored by New Haven Habitat; the event coincides with the organization's 10th anniversary. The tour is officially sponsored by the Connecticut State Fraternal Order of Police. Yale and other community organizations are also supporting the event. All proceeds will fund the construction of Habitat homes in the Greater New Haven area.

Participants in the tour will bike, roller-blade or walk a 10-, 20- or 40-mile route along the shoreline and on rural roads, starting at Old Grove Park on Captain Thomas Boulevard in West Haven. The event will begin at 8 a.m. All registered riders will receive a free T- shirt and water bottle.

A "Yale Women's Team" is being organized by Daisy Rodriguez and Nancy Franco of the Yale Office of New Haven Affairs. Although the team will include riders of both sexes and all ages, it so named because all pledge proceeds raised by the participants will go to the Habitat Women's Build project. Anyone interested in joining this team can call 432-4488.

A "Yale Library Team" is also being assembled by two Cesar Rodriguez and William Massa of the University Library. Pledge proceeds garnered by these team members will go to the Habitat Collegiate Build project. To join, call 432-1835.

A third team composed of Yale students is being organized by Jim Garman '98 of Ezra Stiles College. This team's pledges will also support Collegiate Build. To join, call 436-3082.

Anyone interested in taking part in the Habitat Bicycle Tour is invited to join one of the Yale teams, or to participate on their own. The entry fee for joining a Yale teams is $10. The regular entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children and students. For information about the tour or Habitat for Humanity, call 785-0794.
