Three scholars at Yale win 1997 Guggenheim Fellowship Awards

Two Yale professors and a visiting critic in art at the University are among the 164 individuals in the United States and Canada selected to receive 1997 Guggenheim Fellowships. More than 2,800 people applied for the prestigious awards.

Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of "unusually distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment," according to Joel Conarroe, president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The newly appointed Guggenheim Fellows from Yale and their project topics are: Mahzarin R. Banaji, associate professor of psychology, who will explore the nature of implicit prejudice; Robert A. Burt, the Alexander M. Bickel Professor of Law, who will examine the administration of death in American medicine, law and culture and Laurie Simmons, a visiting critic in art, who will study visual art.

Poets, novelists, playwrights, painters,sculptors, photographers, filmmakers, choreographers, and scientists and scholars in diverse fields are among this year's winners, receiving awards totaling $4,890,000.
