"Hearing the S.O.S. of a Youth in Distress" is the title of the final talk in the Program for Humanities in Medicine lecture series. Dr. Ghislaine Godenne, professor of psychiatry, pediatrics and mental hygiene at Johns Hopkins University, will present the lecture on Thursday, May 15, at 5 p.m. in the Beaumont Room of the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Godenne will discuss depression in late adolescence, the risk factors contributing to suicide in this age group and the reasons why a young person might willingly end his or her life. In addition, she will explain how to assess a person at risk for suicide and suggest methods for keeping a suicidal young person from hurting him herself.

World explorers will recount travels in Ethiopia
World travelers and amateur photographers Arnold and Lucille Alderman will discuss the people, landscape and architecture of Ethiopia on Tuesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. at the Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave. Their talk will focus on the tribal peoples of southern Ethiopia and the architecture of northern Ethiopia, particularly in the ancient cities of Axum, Gondar Bahar Dar and Lalibella.
The event is part of the Hiram Bingham Adventure Program at the Peabody Museum, which is named in honor of an explorer whose expeditions took him across South America. Bingham's collections from Machu Piccu have yielded extraordinary insights into Inca culture.
