Where to see 'Scenes and Smiles'

Black-and-white photographs of children and of landscapes in Nevada and Connecticut are featured in the exhibition "Scenes and Smiles," currently on view in the lobby of the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), 34 Park St.

The photographs were taken by Maris Boyd of Woodbury, Connecticut, whose works have been exhibited locally and in New York City. The word "smiles" in the exhibit's title refers to her images of children, mostly of kindergarteners at St. Martin's school in the West Indies. The word "scenes" refers to her photographs of the Nevada Plains, which Ms. Boyd created using a specialized infrared film and a hand-processing method that renders all green tones with an ethereal white glow. There are also shots of pastoral scenes in Litchfield County.

"Scenes and Smiles" is part of the CMHC Foundation's ARTrageous project, for which artists are invited to present two to three themes for an exhibit. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the artists' work goes to CMHC's art enrichment program for patients. Her work, on display through Sept. 14, can be viewed 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Call 789-7407 for more information.
