WOMEN'S BUILD 1997: Lorimer is honorary chair of newest Habitat project

Women who enjoy wielding hammers, saws and other implements of construction are invited to join in the new Women's Build project sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of New Haven, an organization dedicated to providing home-ownership opportunities to low-income working families.

Vice President and University Secretary Linda K. Lorimer is serving as honorary chair for the 1997 Women's Build, in which a crew of women volunteers will renovate a single-family home at 108 Read St. in New Haven's Newhallville neighborhood. Debra Watson of New Haven Savings Bank and Jennifer Aniskovitch, vice president of the Habitat board of directors, are overseeing the "nuts and bolts" of the project as cochairs of the Steering Committee.

To date, $25,000 has been raised for the 1997 Women's Build through a Men's Auxiliary Bake Sale and through corporate sponsor gifts from 29 local institutions. As in all Habitat projects, the future owners of the home will put in 500 hours of "sweat equity" working alongside volunteers and will purchase their homes from Habitat at 0 percent interest.

The first Women's Build, at 425 Huntington St. in Newhallville, involved 300 women. Over $20,000 was raised for the renovation of that home, one of the 22 projects that Habitat for Humanity of New Haven has completed since its founding 11 years ago.

Anyone interested in becoming involved in the 1997 Women's Build project should call Ms. Aniskovitch at 483-0005.
