Negotiations resume

The start of the new academic year also marked the resumption of negotiations for new labor contracts between the University and unions representing about 3,700 Yale clerical, technical, service and maintenance workers.

Negotiators for Yale and Local 35 met on Sept. 10 in the first general bargaining session since June 14. Another negotiation session for that bargaining unit was scheduled for September 16. No date has yet been set for a Local 34 general bargaining session.

Last week's meeting chilled hopes for a speedy conclusion to the negotiations that began in November 1995. Union and University negotiators differed sharply regarding subcontracting issues, particularly as they relate to University dining halls.

The most complete and current information regarding contract negotiations can be obtained through the Office of Public Affairs' web site at http://www.yale.edu/opa/.
