Color-coated Yale directory coming to your desk soon

Think multi-color when reaching for the newest edition of "The Blue Book," as the Yale University Directory of faculty and staff is commonly known.

The annual publication, so nicknamed because of the plain blue cover it sported for decades, this year features a full-color photograph of autumn on campus -- all golds and greens, with nary a wisp of blue. The colorful cover is just one of the innovations being introduced by the directory's new editor, Dianne Witte.

"We were able to take advantage of the fact that color printing is now so affordable," says Ms. Witte, who as coordinator of special projects in the Office of the Secretary is also in charge of coordinating Commencement and Yale's 300th anniversary celebration in 2001. "We just wanted to do something different," she adds.

For the first time, the University Directory also includes zip codes on some home addresses, when that information was provided. Ms. Witte and the "21st Century Directory Group" are also contemplating future changes that could eventually make it possible for Yale community members to update their own information on- line.

The 1996-97 University Directory has just been published and is being distributed this week via campus mail or, in the case of clinical personnel with off-campus offices, through primary departments.

All persons listed in the University Directory are entitled to a free copy. Additional copies are available to members of the Yale community at $11; these copies may be ordered through departments or purchased at the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St. Businesses and individuals whose work with Yale would be facilitated by a University Directory may order one for $30 from the Office of the Secretary, 105 Wall St.; address mail orders to: Dianne Witte, Directory Project, P.O. Box 208230, New Haven, CT 06520- 8230. They are also on sale at the Yale Visitor Center. The publication is also available to nonprofit organizations at $18. Use of the Yale Directory for purposes other than communication of a business or incidental personal nature is prohibited.
