CAMPUS NOTES

Named as the new Henry Luce Scholar in the Humanities and Social Thought is Benedict Anderson, professor of government and the Aaron L. Binenkorb Professor of International Studies at Cornell University. As a Luce Scholar, he will be in residence for the fall semester as a fellow of the Whitney Humanities Center WHC and will teach both a graduate and faculty seminar addressing issues of nationalism. In addition, he will participate in a conference in November on "Language and National Identity." Noted for his research on Indonesian society, Philippine nationalism and nationalist movements around the world, Professor Anderson has authored numerous books and articles on these subjects. "[He] will, I am sure, serve as the catalyst for much productive thinking at the center this year," says Peter Brooks, director of the WHC.

Robert J. Reed Jr., professor of painting and director of graduate studies in painting at the School of Art, will be the juror for a competition being sponsored by the Erector Square Gallery in New Haven. Winners of the competition will have their works featured in an exhibit titled "Small Paintings, 144 Square Inches or Less," scheduled for Nov. 1-22 at the gallery. All artists aged 18 years and older are encouraged to submit slides of their work, which must have been completed within the last two years. The deadline for slides is Monday, Sept. 16; the fee for three slides is $15. For more information, call the gallery at 865-3311.

Five of the eight featured speakers in "Books Sandwiched In," the annual noon-hour series of book discussions sponsored by the Friends of the New Haven Free Public Library, are Yale affiliates this year. Robert K. Adair, Sterling Professor Emeritus of Physics and senior research scientist, will open the series on Thursday, Sept. 26, with a discussion of G.E. White's "Creating the National Pastime." His talk will take place 12:10-12:50 p.m. at the United Church on the Green, corner of Temple and Elm streets. The public is invited to bring lunch; coffee, tea and cookies will be available in the basement of the church 11:20 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Other Yale-affiliated speakers in the series are Alexander Garvin, Jonathan D. Spence, Barbara Oberg and Howard R. Lamar. The titles and dates of their talks will be announced in future issues of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.

"Colonial Burying Grounds of Eastern Connecticut" is the title of a lecture being presented on Thursday, Sept. 19, by James A. Slater, an emeritus professor at the University of Connecticut. The lecture, sponsored by the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, will be at 8 p.m. at the Kline Geology Laboratory, 210 Whitney Ave. It is free and open to the public. For more information, call 432- 3113, ext. 2.

The Chemical Manufacturers Association recently presented its Catalyst Award, a national award for excellence in teaching chemistry, to J. Michael McBride, professor of chemistry and director of graduate studies in the chemistry department. The award recognized Professor McBride's contributions to undergraduate education at Yale, particularly his work on two courses for freshmen. Professor McBride's teaching has previously been recognized by the Yale College Dylan Hixon Award for Teaching in the Natural Sciences 1992 and the DeVane Medal for Distinguished Scholarship and Teaching 1994 .

Victor H. Vroom, the John G. Searle Professor of Management at the School of Management, will conduct a four-day workshop titled "Leadership and Decision Making in Organizations" Oct. 8-11. The program for executives, which Professor Vroom has taught twice a year since 1976, is based on his book "The New Leadership: Managing Participation in Organizations." An international authority on the psychological analysis of behavior in organizations, Professor Vroom says that rapid changes in the world of business require managers to be both participative and autocratic and to know when to employ each management style. "Let's face it," he says, "a poor decision could cost a company millions." To register for his course and for more information on times and location, call Kate Dowden at 432-6038.

A correction: We noted in the Aug. 26-Sept. 2 issue of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar that Charles A. Greer, associate professor of surgery neurosurgery , was elected as program chair for the joint meeting of the International Symposium on Olfaction and Taste XII and the Association for Chemoreception Sciences XIX. However, we stated incorrectly that the meeting was held this past July. In fact, Professor Greer will chair the meeting next summer, July 7-12, 1997. The gathering, which will take place in San Diego, California, is the major venue for the exchange of basic, clinical and applied research in the chemical senses.
