Urban health issues highlighted in lecture series

AIDS, women's health needs and health policy issues will be highlighted during a new monthly lecture series sponsored by the Urban Health Studies Program at Yale, a collaborative program between the faculty and students of the School of Medicine, its department of epidemiology and public health, and the School of Nursing.

"The lecture series highlights some of the critical issues that impact the urban community and that the Urban Health Program at Yale intends to address," says Dr. Patrick G. O'Connor, who is codirector of the program with Nora E. Groce, assistant professor of public health and anthropology, and Martha Swartz, associate professor of pediatric nursing.

The Urban Health Studies Program, which is supported in part by a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts, seeks to serve as a catalyst for change and collaborations in health professions education. It also focuses on opportunities available in the urban community and encourages the development of sound, informed public policy. The new lecture series extends the program's activities, which have included the support of faculty and student research on urban health topics and the dissemination of health information throughout the medical center and the community.

The first lecture in the new series, "AIDS in the Urban Setting," will be presented on Monday, Sept. 30, by Dr. Peter A. Selwyn, associate director of the Yale AIDS Program and associate professor of medicine and epidemiology and public health. The talk will be held at noon in Rm. 608 of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Public Health, 60 College St. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Watch the Calendar section of this newspaper for notices of upcoming lectures in the series.

For further information, call the series' coordinator, Wanda Anderson Harris, at 203-785-6383.
