Two scholars of gay and lesbian studies to spend academic year as visiting faculty

Two visiting scholars will be teaching at Yale during the 1996- 97 academic year under the sponsorship of the Research Fund for Lesbian and Gay Studies REFLAGS Committee. They are:

Judith Halberstam, a specialist in 19th-century English literature, film, and lesbian and gay studies, who will serve here as visiting assistant professor of English and women's studies; and

Edward Stein, visiting lecturer in philosophy, whose areas of research include epistemology, philosophy of mind-cognitive science, the philosophy of science, and the ethics and philosophy of gender and sexuality.

Professor Halberstam comes to Yale from the University of California at San Diego. She is the author of "Skin Grows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters" and "Posthuman Bodies" with Ira Livingston.

This fall, she is teaching a film studies course titled "Lesbian, Gay and Transgender Cinema"; this spring, she will lead an English seminar on "Gay and Lesbian Literature and Literary Theory." While at Yale, she will also organize and direct a gay-lesbian film series.

Mr. Stein, who most recently taught at Mount Holyoke College and New York University, wrote "Without Good Reason: The Rationality Debate in Philosophy and Cognitive Science" and edited and contributed to the anthology "Forms of Desire: Sexual Orientation and the Social Constructionist Controversy." His third book, "The Metaphysics and Ethics of Sexual Desire," is now in publication.

He is teaching a philosophy course titled "The Metaphysics and Ethics of Sex" in the fall and a seminar on "Innateness" in the spring. While on campus, he is organizing a university-community seminar on "Scientific Research on Sexual Orientation." See Visiting on Campus.

During the spring semester the two scholars will also co-teach a new interdisciplinary "Introduction to Lesbian and Gay Studies" course.
