Head of Violence Against Women Office to speak to city students

Bonnie Campbell, director of the Justice Department's Violence Against Women Office, will be among the speakers at a conference for young women in the New Haven Public Schools, which will be held in Battell Chapel on Friday, Oct. 4. Titled "Young Women 1996: Leadership and Community," the event was organized by the U.S. Department of Education, the city's school system and Yale.

The conference will serve as a source of information and forum for discussion regarding issues that young women must contend with in their schools and communities. Young women from New Haven's Roberto Clemente and Fair Haven Middle Schools and Hillhouse and Wilbur Cross High Schools will attend the conference along with Yale student mentors organized by WISE -- Women in Support of Each Other -- an undergraduate group affiliated with Dwight Hall and the Women's Center.

Ms. Campbell was appointed to her current post by President Clinton based on her work as attorney general in Iowa, where she authored one of the nation's first anti-stalking laws and increased public awareness about violence against women.

Members of the Yale community interested in further information about the conference, should contact the University's Office of New Haven Affairs at 432-4082.
