Parents Weekend 1996

A Parents Weekend Information Table will be staffed on both Friday and Saturday to distribute pre-purchased family meal tickets, and to provide parents

with directions, maps, and general information. Friday, Oct. 11, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St., and Saturday, Oct. 12, 8:30-9:30 a.m., Woolsey Hall Rotunda, corner of College & Grove streets, and 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Visitor Information Center.

Campus Tours will leave from the Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm Street. Tours are approximately one hour and fifteen minutes long. Free. Friday- 10:30 a.m.; noon; 1 p.m.; 3 p.m. Saturday-1:30 p.m.

Tours of the Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel Street. "Highlights From the Permanent Collection." Friday and Saturday-11:30 a.m.; 1:30 p.m. Tours are approximately 45 minutes to one hour long. Free.

Tour of the Yale Center For British Art, 1080 Chapel Street. "British Art Treasures from Russian Imperial Collections in the Hermitage." Saturday-3 p.m. The tour is approximately one hour long. Free.

Friday, Oct. 11

2-4 p.m. -- Faculty Lectures will be delivered by recipients of the 1996 Yale College Teaching Prizes. The lectures are: "Staggering On Stage: Intoxication in Early Modern Drama," by Assistant Professor Laura King, winner of the Sarai Ribicoff '79 Teaching Prize, 2-3 p.m., Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St., Rm. 102; "The Making of a Russian President: the Russian Presidential Elections, 1996," by Assistant Professor Yitzhak Brudny, winner of the Lex Hixon '63 Teaching Prize, 2-3 p.m., W.L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St., Rm. 119; "How To Read Verse Aloud," by Senior Lector Howard Stern, winner of the Yale College Prize for Teaching Excellence, 3-4 p.m., W.L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St., Rm. 119; and "Social, Legal, and Ethical Implications of Modern Reproductive Technology," by Assistant Professor William Segraves, winner of the Dylan Hixon '88 Teaching Prize, 3-4 p.m., Davies Auditorium, 15 Prospect Street.

4:45-6 p.m. -- Panel Discussion: "Yale College Life." Moderated by Betty Trachtenberg, Dean of Student Affairs, this panel will focus on the Yale social environment and life in the Residential Colleges. Panelists: Tyson Belanger, '98 Ezra Stiles College, President, Yale College Council; Harvey Goldblatt, Master of Pierson College, Professor of Medieval Studies, and Slavic Languages and Literatures; Namita Kumar, '97 Timtohy Dwight College, Freshman Counselor; Mark Ryan, Dean of Jonathan Edwards College, Lecturer of American Studies and English. Sudler Recital Hall, HGS, Rm. 201.

5-7 p.m. -- Dinner. Parents are invited to dinner in the Residential College of their son or daughter. Those who did not purchase tickets in advance may pay at the door.

7-7:30 p.m. -- Pre-concert Conversation with Lawrence Leighton Smith, music director of the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale. Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. Free admission.

8-10 p.m. -- Concert: Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale. Sponsored by the Yale School of Music, Lawrence Leighton Smith conducts Alberto Ginastera's Harp Concerto Andrea Steckermeier, harp and Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 6. Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. Free admission.

9:30-11 p.m. -- Concert: Parents Weekend Jam, featuring the Whiffenpoofs and Whim 'n Rhythm. A Yale tradition since 1909, the Whiffenpoofs, composed of senior men, is the oldest undergraduate a cappella singing group; Whim 'n Rhythm is the senior women's a cappella singing group. Together they present one of Yale's popular Jamborees "Jams". Battell Chapel, corner of College and Elm streets. Tickets are available at the Information Table on Friday afternoon at the Visitor Information Center. Admission: $10 per adult, $8 per student.

Saturday, Oct. 12

7-10 a.m. -- Continental Breakfast. Parents are invited to breakfast in Calhoun and Ezra Stiles colleges. Those who did not purchase tickets in advance may pay at the door.

8:30-9:30 a.m. -- Complimentary Coffee, Tea, and Pastry. Woolsey Hall Rotunda, corner of College & Grove streets.

10-11:15 a.m. -- Panel Discussion: "Education in Yale College." This panel will focus on the educational environment, and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions. Co-moderators: Richard C. Levin, President, and Richard H. Brodhead, Dean of Yale College; Panelists: Charles Bailyn, Assistant Professor of Astronomy; Laura King, Assistant Professor of English; and Peter Salovey, Professor of Psychology, and of Epidemiology and Public Health. Woolsey Hall Rotunda, corner of College and Grove streets.

11 a.m.-1 p.m. -- Brunch. Parents are invited to brunch in the Residential College of their son or daughter. Those who did not purchase tickets in advance may pay at the door.

11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. -- Shuttle buses from Payne Whitney Gymnasium to the Yale Bowl/Field House. Buses will leave every 10-15 minutes; the schedule will be posted at the Gym. Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Pkwy.

1:15 p.m. -- Yale vs. Bucknell Football Game. Yale Bowl, Derby Avenue. Tickets may be purchased at the Yale Athletics Ticket Office, Ray Tompkins House, 20 Tower Pkwy., on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4:30-6 p.m. -- Masters' receptions in the Colleges. Parents are invited to a reception hosted by the Master of the Residential College of their son or daughter.

5-7 p.m. --Buffet dinner. Parents are invited to a buffet dinner in the Residential College of their son or daughter. Those who did not purchase tickets in advance may pay at the door.

8-10 p.m.-- Parents Weekend Gala Concert. A combined concert featuring the Yale Concert Band, the Yale Glee Club, and the Yale Symphony Orchestra. Woolsey Hall, corner of College & Grove streets. Free admission. A reception will follow the concert in Hendrie Hall, 165 Elm St., Rm. 201.

Sunday, Oct. 13 7-10 a.m. -- Continental Breakfast. Parents are invited to breakfast in Calhoun and Ezra Stiles colleges. Those who did not purchase tickets in advance may pay at the door.

10-11 a.m. -- Religious Services. A variety of religious services are listed in the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.

11 a.m.-1 p.m. -- Brunch in the Colleges. Parents are invited to brunch in the Residential College of their son or daughter. Those who did not purchase tickets in advance may pay at the door.

1 p.m. -- Parents Weekend officially ends.
