TALKS ON URBAN AMERICA HIGHLIGHT LAW SCHOOL REUNIONS
Urban America will be examined from the perspectives of Law
School alumni, Yale faculty and administrators, two mayors and
former Law School Journalism Fellows who have made careers of
reporting about the nation's cities during this year's Law School
Reunion Weekend, taking place Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18 and 19.
"Our Cities, Our Selves: Urban America as We Know It" is the
theme of this year's reunion, which brings 10 Law School classes and
a group of former Law School Journalism Fellows and back to campus
for talks and a variety of social events. Highlighting the reunion will
be a series of talks on urban issues that are free and open to the
public. They are:
- "New Haven: A Virtual Tour of Yale's Hometown," which will
feature talks by Fred H. Koetter, dean of the School of Architecture;
Douglas W. Rae, the Richard Ely Professor of Management, who
served as chief administrative officer for former New Haven mayor
John C. Daniels; and Daniel J. Ryan, coordinator of the New Haven City
Room at the Yale Institute for Social and Policy Studies. This event
will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. in Levinson Auditorium of the
Law School, 127 Wall St.
- "New Haven: Where Do We Go from Here?" is a question that
will be explored by New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr.; Robert C.
Ellickson LAW '66, the Walter E. Meyer Professor of Property and
Urban Law; Henry Fernandez LAW '94, director of the Leadership,
Education and Athletics in Partnership LEAP program for urban
youth; and Hugh Price LAW '66, president and chief executive officer
of the National Urban League. Linda K. Lorimer LAW '77 , vice
president and secretary of the University, will moderate the
discussion, which will be held on Friday at 4 p.m. in Levinson
Auditorium.
- "Public Education in America's Cities" will be discussed by
four prominent individuals: Richard Blumenthal LAW '73, attorney
general for the State of Connecticut; Diane S. Ravitch, historian of
education at New York University; Benno C. Schmidt LAW '66,
president of The Edison Project and former Yale president; Baltimore
Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke, who is also a member of the Yale
Corporation; and Albert Shanker, president of the American
Federation of Teachers. The discussion, which will take place on
Saturday at 10:15 a.m. in Levinson Auditorium, will be moderated by
John G. Simon LAW '53, the Augustus E. Lines Professor of Law.
- "Covering Urban America: Reflections by Two Decades of Yale
Law School Journalism Fellows" will be the topic of a discussion by
Diane G. Camper '77 M.S.L., a member of the editorial board of The
New York Times; Adrian Nicole LeBlanc '93 M.S.L., a freelance writer;
Davan R. Maharaj '95 M.S.L. of The Los Angeles Times; and Michael P.
McGough '77 M.S.L., editorial page editor for The Pittsburgh Gazette.
Their talks will begin at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday in Rm. 127 of the Law
School.
As part of reunion festivities, Mr. Price will be awarded the
Medal of Merit at an alumni luncheon on Saturday. The award will be
presented by Drew S. Days III '66, the Alfred M. Rankin Professor of
Law.
