Faculty to present their perspectives on racial, ethnic tensions

Conflict, both international and domestic, will be the topic of two talks being presented this week by Yale faculty members.

Benjamin Harshav will present a talk on "Hamatsav: The Situation in Israel" at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. Mr. Harshav, the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Professor of Hebrew Language and Literature, will discuss the events leading to the current escalation of violence between Jews and Palestinians and will offer his own insights on the situation. All are invited to attend and participate in this discussion. Refreshments will be served.

"Racial Healing" will be the topic of a talk on Thursday, Oct. 17, by Harlon L. Dalton, professor of law. The lecture, sponsored by the Program for Humanities in Medicine, will take place at 5 p.m. in the Beaumont Room of the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. Professor Dalton, author of the book "Racial Healing: Confronting the Fear Between Blacks and Whites," contends that Americans have become "politically paralyzed" with fear that confrontation will lead to an ever-greater racial divide and that it is only by taking risks that racial healing will occur. This talk is also free and open to the public.
