Henri J.M. Nuowen

The Reverend Henri J.M. Nouwen, associate professor of pastoral theology at the Divinity School 1971-78, died of a heart attack on Sept. 21 in the Netherlands. He was 64 years old.

A Roman Catholic priest and a native of the Netherlands, Mr. Nuowen taught at Harvard and Notre Dame universities, as well as at Yale, before taking up a post in 1986 as chaplain in the interfaith L'Arche Daybreak Community in Toronto, a community that includes people with mental disabilities.

He achieved an international and interdominational following for his more than 30 books, which include "Intimacy" and "The Return of the Prodigal Son." In fact, at the time of his death, Mr. Nuowen was preparing to leave on a trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, for production of a film based on the latter work.

He is survived by his father, Laurent Nuowen, two brothers and a sister, all living in the Netherlands.
