Colleagues to pay tribute to late composer Jacob Druckman

New Music New Haven will present a memorial concert in honor of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Yale faculty member Jacob Druckman at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Morse Recital Hall of Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St.

The concert will feature works by Mr. Druckman, professor of composition, who served on the School of Music faculty from 1976 until his death on May 24. The works to be performed are "Animus," with John Swallow on trombone; "DarkWind," with Syoko Aki on violin and Pansy Chang on cello; "Nor Spell Nor Charm," conducted by Lawrence Leighton Smith; and "Incenters," conducted by Denis Segond. Mr. Swallow, Ms. Aki, Ms. Chang and Mr. Smith are all members of the Yale faculty.

Admission to the concert is free. For further information, call 432-4157. In conjunction with the event, there will be an exhibit of memorabilia, scores and photos related to Professor Druckman's life and work on display in the Yale Music Library, 100 Wall St. One of the most honored of contemporary American composers, Professor Druckman was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1972 for his work "Windows" and was named the Charles Ives Laureate Composer of the State of Connecticut in 1993. He received commissions from many major orchestras in the United States, and his works have been recorded widely. In fact, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, which had commissioned a work by the composer before his death, paid tribute to Professor Druckman at its season opener in Woolsey Hall on Oct. 17. A scholarship fund in Professor Druckman's name has been established at the School of Music. Contributions may be sent to: The Jacob Druckman Memorial Fund, Dean's Office, Yale School of Music, P.O. Box 208246, New Haven, CT 06520.
