Conference to focus on physician-patient communications

Physicians-in-training will consider how they can communicate more effectively with a diverse population of patients -- and thereby improve the quality of health care those patients receive -- at a conference being held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15, at the School of Medicine.

The conference, on the theme "Physicians and the Community: Empowering Each Other, Bridging the Gap," is sponsored by the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), the nation's oldest student-run organization addressing the needs and concerns of medical and pre-medical students of color.

The conference highlights will include workshops on cultural sensitivity in the doctor-patient relationship, medicine and technology and alternative medicine; sessions for pre-medical students; a plenary session on "Managing in a World of Managed Care"; a day-long residency fair; a research forum describing projects in academic and clinical research. Monetary prizes will also be awarded to outstanding research projects during the conference.

All activities will be held in the Laboratory for Epidemiology and Public Health, 60 College St.

Those interested in attending the conference should register by Friday, Oct. 31. The fee for SNMA members is $15 for undergraduates and $25 for graduate students; the fee for nonmembers is $20 for undergraduates and $30 for graduate students. For workshops schedules and registration information, contact Stephanie Boykin at boykinsa@biomed.med.yale.edu. Students who want to participate in the research forum should contact Connie Nduaguba at nduaguco@biomed.med.yale.edu as soon as possible.
