Rogers M. Smith, professor and director of graduate studies in the political science department, will discuss and sign copies of his new book "Civic Ideals: Conflicting Visions of Citizenship in U.S. History," 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Book Haven, 290 York St. Refreshments will be served. "Civic Ideals," recently released by Yale University Press, "uses an extensive study of U.S. citizenship laws to show just how central racial, ethnic and gender hierarchies have been in the construction of American national identity," explains Professor Smith. The work is a selection of the History Book Club.
