'Scholarship & Sweets'

Chef Jacques Pepin to be guest
at benefit for YUWO program

Renowned chef Jacques Pepin will be the featured guest at "Scholarship & Sweets," a "dessert gala" to benefit the Yale University Women's Organization (YUWO) Scholarship Program, which will be held 7:30-10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Artspace, 70 Audubon St.

The evening's program will begin with an opportunity for guests to view the exhibition gallery at Artspace, as well as the "Celebration of American Crafts" display in the Creative Arts Workshop.

Beginning at 8:30 p.m., Mr. Pepin will speak about his career and his work, and answer questions from the audience. He will also inscribe copies of his newest book, "Cooking with Claudine," which will be available for purchase. A native of France, Mr. Pepin began his culinary career at age 13. He was the personal chef to three French heads of state, including President Charles de Gaulle, before coming to the United States in 1959. He is currently dean of studies at the French Culinary Institute in New York and teaches at Boston University. He founded the American Institute of Wine and Food and is currently featured on the PBS show "Jacques Pepin's Kitchen: Cooking with Claudine."

Throughout the evening, guests can partake of signature desserts prepared by area restaurants, caterers and bakeries, as well as champagne and coffee. Following Mr. Pepin's talk at 9 p.m., there will be a raffle of culinary baskets donated by participating chefs.

Tickets to "Scholarship & Sweets" are $25. For further information, or to make a reservation, call Eileen Saper at (203) 272-8807.

YUWO is open to all women who are members of the Yale community, either through their own or their family's affiliation. Each spring YUWO awards Scholarships for Continuing Education to women from the Yale community whose formal education has been interrupted or delayed and who wish to resume their studies to enhance or change their careers. Since the program began in 1972, YUWO has awarded a total of $119,500 in 153 scholarships.
