Differing desires for individuality explored in play by Yale student

"Yale Playwrights at the Rep: Plays by the Graduating Class," a playreading series sponsored by the School of Drama and the Yale Repertory Theatre, will begin its second year on Monday, Nov. 17, with a presentation of "The Other One" by third-year graduate student Michelle Nicole Lee.

"The Other One" examines the lives of John and Gary, two African-American twins who have never been separated for more than three hours during their 21 years of life. The twins' desire to maintain their connection in the face of their first long-term separation is juxtaposed with the story of Yasmin, a young Indian woman who longs to hold onto her individuality as she prepares to enter into an arranged marriage. According to Ms. Lee, the dialogue in her work rises directly from interviews she conducted with these individuals.

"The Other One" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the lounge of the Yale Rep, corner of York and Chapel streets. The reading is free and open to the public; however, because there are space limitations, reservations are encouraged. For further information, or to make a reservation, call 432-1570.
