Jamboree at the medical school will raise scholarship funds for New Haven students

Presentations of music, dance and poetry will highlight the Peter A.T. Grannum Scholarship Jamboree being held 8-10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, in the School of Medicine's Harkness Auditorium, 333 Cedar St. The event is sponsored by the Yale chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), an organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical and premedical students of color.

Proceeds from the annual benefit will be used to provide scholarships to New Haven high school students participating in this spring's Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program at the School of Medicine. The 10-week program gives minority high school students the opportunity to come to the School of Medicine to learn about important health topics from Yale students in the medical and health professions programs. Scholarships are awarded to outstanding participants at the conclusion of the program.

Members of both the Yale and New Haven communities are lending their talents to the scholarship jamboree. Natasha John '98 of Calhoun College will serve as emcee for the show, which will feature vocal selections by the Yale Gospel Choir, Shades, Sherri D. Sandifer and the Ultrasounds; dance performances by Rhythmic Blue, the South Asian Dance Ensemble and the Yale Med Dance Troop; and music presentations by the Dan Capliviski Quartet, Korean Drumming Unity and a member of the Yale Symphony Orchestra.

The evening will also include poetry readings by Dr. Frank Bia, professor and codirector of the International Health Program in the department of internal medicine, and professor of laboratory medicine. Readings will also be presented by Adrienne Carter of the School of Drama and others.

Tickets will be on sale at the medical school noon-1 p.m. through Jan. 16. Tickets may also be purchased at the door on
the evening of the jamboree. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children and students.

Gift donations for the scholarship can
