University launches a new medical plan to bring quality care to employees who are injured at work

To ensure that employees who are injured at work receive the best medical care, Yale -- in conjunction with the Workers' Compensation Office -- has developed a Medical Care Plan, a managed care approach to workers' compensation.

Under this plan, a network of medical care providers has been specifically selected to treat work-related injuries. These providers -- who are committed to accessibility and dedication in providing University employees with quality care to assist in timely recovery -- include orthopedic specialists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, hand specialists, physical therapists and chiropractors. Their names are listed in the Yale University Workers' Compensation Medical Care Plan Directory, which is available in designated locations on campus, including Yale University Health Services (YUHS), Human Resource Office, business offices and the Workers' Compensation Office.

This Medical Care Plan and the Preferred Provider Network has been filed with and approved by the Workers' Compensation Commission of the State of Connecticut. The plan was effective as of Jan. 1.

Under the Medical Care Plan, any employee injured while working must notify his or her supervisor.
Medical treatment may be obtained at Yale University Health Services (YUHS), at Yale-New Haven Hospital Emergency Room or with any provider listed in the directory. In a medical emergency, an employee may
go to the nearest emergency room, but must identify himself or herself as a Yale University employee.

All employees have the obligation to immediately notify their supervisor of any injury. The supervisor must then report that injury to the Workers' Compensation Office via a Department Report of Injury. For treatment at YUHS, the employee must bring a University Health Services Appointment and Report form which has been filled out by his or her supervisor.

If medical treatment is needed in a specialty not listed in the Medical Care Plan Directory, the injured employee may choose any Connecticut licensed physician within that particular specialty.
