Former Yale professor Lea Brilmayer has rejoined ranks of the Law School faculty as the Howard M. Holtzmann Professor of International Law, by vote of the Yale Corporation.
Brilmayer has published books and articles on a variety of subjects, including international law and international relations; conflict of laws and civil procedure; federal jurisdiction; and jurisprudence. Among her books are "Justifying International Acts," "American Hegemony: Political Morality in a One Superpower World," "Cases and Material on the Conflict of Laws" and "Conflict of Laws: Foundations and Future Directions."
This spring, she will lead an "International Litigation" seminar, and in the 1998-99 academic year, she will teach a section of "Contracts," a course on "Conflict of Laws" and a seminar on "Public International Law." She will continue to be involved with international development issues and public international law issues for developing countries, working with Law School students on projects in those areas, especially in Africa.
"Lea Brilmayer's return to Yale Law School is tremendously exciting," remarked Dean Anthony Kronman. "She brings boundless enthusiasm and energy to the school, and a wealth of current, practical experience in international law and developing economies, as well as international standing as an exceptional scholar of great insight and compassion. We are very pleased to have her back with us, both as a friend and as a colleague."
From 1991 to 1997, Brilmayer was the Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law and director of the International Development Clinic at the New York University (NYU) School of Law. Among other projects, this clinic organized students to do legal research for the government of Eritrea. Also at NYU, Brilmayer ran a colloquium on international relations as it relates to law, ethics, philosophy, and political theory.
Prior to her tenure at NYU, she served on the faculty of Yale Law School for almost a decade, first as professor of law (1982-86), and then as the Nathan Baker Professor of Law (1986-91). Brilmayer has also taught at the law schools at Columbia and Harvard, and the universities of Chicago and of Texas. She received her B.A. in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley, where she also received her J.D. She holds a LL.M. from Columbia Law School.
