British band will rock in free museum concert

The Yale Center for British Art has echoed with the cacophony of bagpipes and trilled to the tune of a soprano. For the first time in its 20-year history, however, the building will rock when the museum hosts a free concert by The Screaming Windsors on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m. in the entrance court at 1080 Chapel St.

The Screaming Windsors have had an international following under the name The Jack Rubies since 1987. The group toured with They Might Be Giants when its American debut, titled "Fascinatin' Vacation," made the Top 10 Alternative list in 1988.

The London-based band is known for its late-1970s pop music style, which is reminiscent of English New Wave, and employs a heavy percussive element with bongos and bells. The group is also known for its wry, humorous presence onstage, as well as its cynical lyrics, which often focus on America and Americana.

The Screaming Windsors include guitarist and songwriter Ian Wright, bassist Steve Brockway and drummer Martin Owens (formerly of Speedball Baby).

The Yale Center for British Art is open to the public free of charge. For information on its hours or other events, call 432-2800 or visit the museum's World Wide Web site at http://www.yale.edu/ycba.
