Area artists are invited to show work, studios during pre-festival event

Area artists are being invited to participate in "Open Studios '98NH2000," a non-juried exhibition and open house that will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17. Yale is one of the sponsors of the event, which is the first of its kind to be held in the region.

During "Open Studios '98NH2000," artists from New Haven and surrounding areas will invite the public into their studios noon-5 p.m. each day. Participating artists will have one representative piece on display at Artspace, where the public can view the range of works and decide which studios to visit. The artworks in both the exhibit and studios will be for sale. The New Haven Advocate will publish a special section on the event, including a map showing the location of each studio. The map will also appear in the Fairfield Weekly and the Hartford Advocate in the week prior to the event. Several organizations -- including downtown businesses, realtors and Yale -- are working to arrange temporary spaces for artists whose studios are outside the geographic boundaries of the tour.

Inspired by a successful annual event in San Francisco and Oakland, California, "Open Studios '98NH2000" will be part of a series of "PreFest" events taking place in the weeks prior to the International Festival of Arts and Ideas. It has been organized by a group of local artists, cultural organizations, businesses and individual volunteers.

Artists who wish to participate must submit an entry form by 5 p.m. on Monday,
Feb. 23, at Artspace, 70 Audubon St. Entry forms are available at the Yale Visitor Information Center, 149 Elm St.; Artspace and/or the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, 70 Audubon St.; and the Dixwell Community Q House, 197 Dixwell Ave. Entry forms are also available online at www.yale.edu/openstudios. For more information, call 932-9095 Mondays, 1-6 p.m.
