Memorial service for John C. Pope

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 13, in honor of the late John C. Pope, the William Lampson Professor Emeritus of English, who died in April at the age of 93. The service will begin at 3 p.m. in Dwight Chapel, 67 High St.

Professor Pope was a distinguished scholar of Old English language and literature who was well-known for having worked out the metrical patterns of Old English poetry -- a puzzle that had long eluded scholars on both sides of the Atlantic. He also authored a number of acclaimed editions of Old English texts.

A graduate of Yale College in 1925, he earned a Ph.D. from the University in 1931, and was a member of the faculty for nearly 50 years. He retired in 1971, but continued his scholarly work and remained active in the Yale and New Haven communities until the time of his death.
