Other Festival Highlights

While the other off-campus events highlighting the International Festival of Arts and Ideas are too numerous to mention in their entirety, the following is a list of some of the highlights of the third annual event, being held Wednesday-Sunday, June 24-28.

Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson will present an opening night concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Shubert Center for the Performing Arts, 247 College St. Admission is $10, $25 or $40 ($125 for patron tickets).

The Royal National Theatre of London will present the American premiere of Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" at Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Dr. Set in 1941, "Copenhagen" focuses on a meeting between Danish physicist Niels Bohr and his former protege Werner Heisenberg, who was responsible for the Nazi nuclear weapons research program. The play will be presented at 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $25 and $32.

The international theatrical circus Cirque Baroque will present the American premiere of "Ningen" at the Shubert Center at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Inspired by Japanese artistry and tradition, "Ningen" reveals a world in which the characters are deeply divided between an appetite for life and the ecstasy of death.

The family band known as Leahy will bring its blend of Irish, French Canadian and Scottish solo and ensemble step-dancing to the New Haven Green at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Admission to the concert is free. (In event of rain, all New Haven Green concerts will be held in Woolsey Hall, corner of Grove and College streets.)

Little Richard, a.k.a. "the architect of rock and roll," will present a free concert on the New Haven Green at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Richard's hits have included "Tutti Frutti," "Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Long Tall Sally," among others.

The 13-member band El Gran Combo, which has been dubbed "The University of Salsa," will present a concert of Latin music at 5 p.m. on Sunday on the New Haven Green. Admission is free.

Other festival highlights will include "Big Ideas for the New Millennium," presentations about what life will be like in the 22nd century; "Heart of the Matter," a festival on the New Haven Green featuring activities for children ages 5-12 and their families; "Downtown," a street festival featuring performers from New Haven and Connecticut; "Art on the Edge," a celebration of the arts on Audubon Street; and "Jazz Haven," performances by jazz performers in downtown New Haven. In addition, there will be street entertainment and strolling performers throughout the festival, and tours of local churches and architects' offices.
