Five recent graduates have won fellowships
to teach in the Far East

Four seniors who will be graduating from Yale College this May and a recent alumnus of the University have been awarded teaching fellowships by the Yale-China Association . The newly named fellows will teach English in Hong Kong and mainland China for the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 academic years.

The four members of the Class of 1998 are Alice Ko of Branford College, Daniel Magida of Saybrook College, and Daniel Walfish and Alex Brenner, both of Silliman College. The fifth teaching fellow will be Brian Seibert, who graduated from Yale College in 1997.

Seibert will teach at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he will be responsible for a series of English courses called "Writing About Language and Literature," as well as elective courses on American culture and history. An English major from California, Seibert comes to his position with extensive writing and editing experience.

Magida and Walfish will work in Changsha, where Yale-China has been sending teachers since its earliest years. They will teach spoken English to middle and high school students at Yali Middle School. Both bring to their new positions significant experience with foreign cultures. Magida, a Russian and East European studies major, has traveled to Asia, Russia, northern Europe and Costa Rica. Walfish, a biology major, spent a semester last year pursuing neuroscience research in France.

Brenner will teach English to business, economics and finance majors at Zhongshan University's Lingnan (University) College in Guangzhou. He has taught English previously, both in Spain and in the United States, and will be adding Chinese to the five languages he has studied. He majored in history at Yale.

Ko will work at Huizhen Academy, a new school in Ningbo, Zhejiang, for grades one through nine. She majored in ethics, politics and economics, and focused on rural issues in China for her senior essay. This will be the second year that Yale-China has sent teachers to Huizhen Academy, thanks to funding from Henry Fan of Hong Kong.
