Fellowships in a variety of fields are available to graduate students and faculty

Several fellowships currently are available for research in the sciences, inquiry abroad or language study.

Applications for the following four grants may be obtained from Richard G. Sleight, associate dean of the Graduate School, in Rm. 2678, Hall of Graduate Studies (HGS), 320 York St. For additional infor-mation about these awards, contact Pat Cabrel at 432-2744.

* Fulbright-Hays Training Grants. There are two kinds: The Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program provides 6- to 12-month grants to advanced graduate students for full-time doctoral dissertation research overseas in modern non-western language and area studies. The Faculty Research Abroad Program provides 3-to-12-month grants for research abroad in modern foreign language and area studies. To be eligible, faculty members must have been teaching or conducting research relevant to their foreign language or area of specialization during the two years preceding the award date. Applications are due Monday, Oct. 20.

* National Science Foundation Fellowships. There are two kinds: Graduate Fellowships for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study in science, mathematics or engineering, and Minority Graduate Fellowships for students in the early stages of their graduate study who are members of an ethnic minority group underrepresented in science, mathematics or engineering. To be eligible, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien of the U.S. The deadline to submit applications is Thursday, Nov. 6.

* Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellowships in the Biological Sciences. These fellowships are for students at or near the beginning of their graduate study toward a Ph.D. degree in designated fields. Both U.S. citizens and noncitizens may apply. The deadline to submit an application is Wednesday, Nov. 12.

* National Security Education Program (NSEP) Fellowship. This grant allows graduate students to pursue specialization in area and language study or to add an important international dimension to their education. Funds are provided for either full-time or summer study. NSEP supports students pursuing studies of languages, cultures and world regions outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Jan. 15.

* DAAD Fellowships. Applications for the "Direktstipendium" (DAAD) for the 1998-99 academic year are available in the Graduate School Reception and Information Office, located in Rm. 139, HGS. The competition for grants, held by the German Academic Exchange Service, is for students in Ph.D. programs who wish to study or conduct research at a German university. Preference will be given to students engaged in dissertation research. Completed applications should be returned to Rm. 113, HGS, no later than Monday, Oct. 13.

* International Predissertation Fellowships. Training fellowships are awarded by the Social Science Research Council and the American Council of Learned Societies, with funding support from the Ford Foundation. The awards encourage students
of social science to prepare for research in the developing world by deepening their knowledge of the cultural context in which that research will be conducted. Twelve-month training fellowships are available to students in programs leading to a Ph.D.
in economics, political science, sociology, psychology, history, anthropology, geography and demography, or any subfield of these areas.

The International Predissertation Fellowship Program provides support for a full-time program of overseas and domestic study designed to acquire or strengthen language skills and knowledge of the particular cultural, historical, political and social context of a theoretical issue in Africa, China, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Near and Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
