Winks honored for promoting Canadian studies

This summer, Robin W. Winks, chair of the department of history and of Yale's Committee on Canadian Studies, received the Governor General's International Award for Canadian Studies, which is presented by the International Council for Canadian Studies in recognition of significant career achievements in the promotion of the study of Canada.

Professor Winks is the first non-Canadian to receive this honor, which recognizes his efforts as a champion of a comparative approach to the study of Canada, especially in the United States; his five books on Canada; his lecturing and teaching at Canadian institutions as well as at Yale; and his work with Parks Canada. He also was cited for his work with the Association for Canadian Studies in the United States in its foundation years, as well as his promotion of Canadian content in textbooks and in environmental studies programs. Professor Winks has been a member of the Yale faculty since 1957.
