Winks will discuss an unsolved case of murder from 1881

An unsolved murder in 1881 that captured widespread attention will be explored on Wednesday, Oct. 15, in a talk by Robin Winks, the Randolph W. Townsend Jr. Professor and chair of history.

In "An Unsolved Murder: Jenny Cramer," Professor Winks will discuss the mysterious case of a woman found dead on a West Haven beach who was "seduced" and poisoned, according to autopsy reports. Despite what the Coroner's Jury said, a New Haven Superior Court jury found the people accused of her murder not guilty.

Professor Winks' lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the New Haven Colony Historical Society, 114 Whitney Ave. The cost is $2 per person; free to members of the historical society.

Drs. Ward and Silber will present talks about breast cancer

Dr. Barbara A. Ward, director of the Yale Comprehensive Breast Care Center, and Dr. Andrea Silber, assistant clinical professor of medicine (oncology) will be among the featured speakers in a symposium titled "Current Issues and Controversies in Breast Cancer" on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Hospital of Saint Raphael.

Sponsored by Y-ME of New England, the symposium will explore such topics as exercise, surgery, legislation and nutrition. Dr. Silber will discuss "Exercise and Breast Care" and Dr. Ward will discuss "Sentinel Node Dissection."

The symposium, which will be held 8 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in the hospital's auditorium, is free and open to the public. Reservations are required.
